5K RESULTS

The day before the Dublin City Marathon, 6 club members took on the much shorter distance of 5 kilometres.

The following 5 competed in the race in Kilmurry McMahon, CoClare:

Annette Keane had a good outing at the Balla 5k----finishing in 3rd place overall.

THE DUBLIN DOZEN!!

The club had 12 representatives in the 30th edition of the Dublin City Marathon on Bank Holiday Monday.

For some it was their first attempt at a marathon and it was great that all 12 completed the course.

Fionnuala Keane had a time of 3 hours 4 minutes and was 2nd in the
O-35 category--a mere 41 seconds behind the winner of the category.

ROAD RACING/CROSS-COUNTRY RESULTS

ATHLETICS ROUND-UP

Loughrea Athletic Club members were in action in both road racing and cross-country over last weekend.

The first race of the cross-country season was the County Senior competition, held in Tuam. Caroline Clancy claimed the silver medal from the impressive Kathryn Casserly.

The club had a number of representatives in the Galway Bay half marathon in Galway city. Some of them were using the event in the build-up to the 30th edition of the Dublin City marathon and the end of October.

ONE-TWO FOR CLONLIFFE HARRIERS ATHLETES IN LOUGHREA

The Loughrea 5 mile road race was held in ideal weather conditions on Sunday last. Starting and finishing at the Loughrea Hotel and Spa, the 400 strong field were sent on their way by world silver medallist, Olive Loughnane.

Mark Kenneally was the first to cross the line in a fast time of 23 minutes, 43 seconds, with his Clonliffe clubmate, Sergiu Ciobanu, 26 seconds further back in a time of 24:09.

ICH BIN EIN BERLINER!!!!!!

For the second time in a month the club had a representative pounding the streets of a German city.

This time it was the turn of Paul Keane in the Berlin Marathon. Running in a race that attracted nearly 49,000 runners, and in temperatures approaching 25 degrees, Paul showed that his recent form in shorter road races could be transferred to the 26.2 mile distance.

His finishing time was a very fine 3 hours 11 minutes----a massive improvement of over an hour on his 2008 time in the Dublin City Marathon.

Gluckwunsch, Paul. As they say in Germany---Das ist herrlich, nicht wahr.

IRISH RECORD FOR OLIVE LOUGHNANE

The final race in the IAAF Race Walking Challenge 2009 was held in Saransk, Russia on Saturday last. The Challenge consists of 10 races at which points are collected—the World Championship in Berlin, six IAAF permit meetings and three Area races.

In the 10k race in Russia, Olive finished 4th in a top-class field in a new Irish record of 43 minutes 22 seconds. The previous record belonged to Gillian O’Sullivan and had stood since July 2000.

UK No1 Confirmed for Loughrea 5 Mile Road Race

Freya Murray of Scotland has confirmed she will compete at the Loughrea 5 mile road race due to take place on the 27th September. The UK champion over 5000m will travel over from Edinburgh the day before the race and will stay at the Lough Rea Hotel & Spa in preparation for the race.

OLIVE'S HOMECOMING!!!

Olive Loughnane will be coming to Loughrea on Sun. 30th for a triumphant homecoming after her medal-winning performance in Berlin.

Olive will be in the Main Street at 1pm.

All club members are requested to be at the car-park on the Mart Road at 12 noon----wearing their club colours, for the parade to the stand in the Main Street.
